Separation of Powers
The branches of the government are separated into three sections: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. Basically, the Legislative branch is Congress, which makes the laws, the Executive branch is the President, which passes the laws, and the Judicial branch is the Supreme Court, which puts the laws into effect.
Another example of this is Britain's parliamentary government, where power is split between the parliament and monarchy for legislative and executive power. Many other countries utilize this system.
